Dairy farmers Dan and Crystal Ley from Richmond, MN are proud to be certified in the Minnesota Agricultural Certification Program (MAWQCP). They raise cows and pigs and also grow corn, soybeans and alfalfa on over 250 acres that have been completely no-tilled since 2007. Every acre in corn or soybeans is followed with a cover crop that is either drilled or aerially seeded.
In addition, Dan and Crystal are using a Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant to compare four different forage cover crops following corn silage.
The Leys enjoy sharing their philosophy with fellow farmers and have hosted numerous field days on their farm to highlight the benefits of no-tilling and cover crops. They’ve implemented several conservation practices on their land, including field borders, grassed waterways, nutrient and integrated pest management.
Third Street Brewhouse is proud to partner with the MAWQCP to recognize local farmers for the great work they are doing to protect our local water resources. As a sign of our support and appreciation, we’re happy to provide each certified farmer with a Minnesota Gold sign and case of beer.
